The Hardy Boys #30 The Wailing Siren Mystery ~ My Review

Hardy Boys fans have a lot to enjoy in The Wailing Siren Mystery, the 30th volume of the main HB series! 😀 Great scenes, intense danger, and thrilling excitement in this. Great family, too. I love that. 🙂 You’ve got all kinds of things happening! An intense storm at the beginning while the Hardy brothers are in their boat, Sleuth. A mysterious siren, money falling from the sky, danger from a potential collision with a yacht, theft, kidnapping – and that’s just in the first half of the book!!!! And you’re there with them every step of the way! 😎 The exciting action is great. The heart-warming brotherly love is great. It’s an excellent read! 🙂

The mysteries in the book all flow well and while a lot goes on, it’s not too much. I love that many Hardy book characters show up in The Wailing Siren Mystery. The whole Hardy family ~ Fenton, Laura, Frank, Joe, and Aunt Gertrude. Joe’s love, Iola, and Frank’s love, Callie. Chet Morton, Biff Hooper, Tony Prito, Officer Con Riley, Fenton’s operative Sam Radley, Chief Ezra Collig, Jack Wayne gets introduced – and kidnapped by the bad guys! And we even have an appearance by Oscar Smuff, who’s a policeman in the mystery and does his job. 😮 I missed Phil Cohen in this one. He must have been on vacation elsewhere. Hope he had fun! 🙂

There are so many parts I could quote and talk about – how do I choose?!?!?! 😀 The clues, investigating, and crime-fighting are very well done. They use their brains and utilize resources including tech and fight when they have to. 😎

Frank is kidnapped and what an intense part of the book that is! Joe is a great brother (so is Frank!) and he knows something isn’t right. He goes to investigate and tries to find his brother. You can’t stop reading! 😮 Great brotherly love. 🙂 😎

As has been mentioned on The Bayport Library page here, the wolves are scary. They can be terrifying in the book because of the realistic writing.

Okay, so there are number of really intense scenes! Another one is when Joe goes missing and Frank’s really worried. Joe and Chet risk their lives and well-being at a threat to Iola’s life. I don’t think I can tell you more without spoilers! If you’ve read it you know what I’m talking about, and if you haven’t, you will when you read it! 🙂

So many great quotes in The Wailing Siren Mystery. Such as from feisty Aunt Gertrude ~

…Aunt Gertrude said excitedly: “Take your two-way radio and keep in touch. If anybody bothers you, I’ll give him a piece of my mind!”

And she means it, too! 😀 😎

There are a lot of great scenes in this book (I think I’ve already alluded to that 😉 Oh, wait, I think I flat-out said that 😀 ), but I’ll share this one with everyone where a bad guy is trying to scare the Hardy brothers. Yeah, I love that they don’t let the bad guys win or intimidate them. Frank and Joe outwit him. 😀 To set the scene, they are on the Sleuth and the one bad guy pirate has just gotten on the boat and is asking the brothers if they’re going to leave or not like they’d been warned and threatened to ~

He was several inches over six feet and as burly as a bear. menacingly he approached Joe.

   “Are you going to scram?”

   “No.”

The man lunged at Joe, who tried to grapple with him. Frank sprang to his brother’s defense, but before he could clamp a hold on the stranger, the assailant had pitched Joe far over the side of the boat. After a brief struggle Frank followed. The Hardys bobbed to the surface several feet from the boats.

Frank hissed into Joe’s ear, “Pretend we can’t swim.”

The boys thrashed about madly, crying for help.

I just love the way they tricked the bad guys! There’s more to the scene and I could keep going. There are a number of cool action scenes throughout the book. It’s really difficult not putting on more, but I can’t put practically the whole book on here. 😛 Believe me, you want to read this one. Most libraries should have it and certainly booksellers should also. 🙂

Brave Aunt Gertrude does a great job with helping Joe against a thug by using a shillelagh (shillelagh just sounds so cool) saving Joe from a vicious kick. 🙂

Another great quote that is the difficult, but necessary stance ~

“We don’t go for deals,” Joe said.

Even when things looked bad they didn’t give up hope and are defiant against the bad guys. A lot of bravery in this mystery! Look at all they have to fight – greedy, violent, murderous thieves. Multiple kidnappings, grand larceny, and a lot more. That takes more than a little courage and skill – and of course, a lot of prayer!

The Hardy Boys #30 The Wailing Siren Mystery is available in hardback and digital formats at booksellers and libraries. I definitely recommend it! 🙂 😎

For everyone who has been reading it recently, too, or has read it before, or is looking forward to reading it, please let me know what you think! 🙂 There’s definitely a lot to like about this exciting mystery! 🙂 😎

New collector covers coming 17th Oct, 2017 –
The Hardy Boys #5 Hunting for Hidden Gold
The Hardy Boys #6 The Shore Road Mystery

Of the current covers, my favorite is #5 Hunting for Hidden Gold, and one of my all-time faves among all Hardy Boys books. The outdoor scenes on all four are cool-looking (not just literally like the snow on #8 The Mystery of Cabin Island. 😉 ) I like the cliffs and caves on #5 Hunting for Hidden Gold, #6 The Shore Road Mystery and #7 The Secret of the Caves – they look like fun to see and explore in the book. You can almost hear the water rolling onto the shore on The Secret of the Caves. Naturally, since I love The Hardy Boys books, it’s hard waiting – while simultaneously dreading – the collector cover art reveal. 😛 I try to always be optimistic and hope for the best. The Hardy Boys #161 Training for Trouble ~ My Review

You know there’s going to be a lot of great action when a new combat sports training facility opens in Bayport, New York! It has archery (cool!), judo (cool!), and fencing (cool!)! It also has danger – lots of it – as Iola and Frank find out firsthand in the beginning of the book and then later Joe! 😮 And they’re not the only ones. So they need to find out what’s going on with the sabotage hitting the facility, investigate the motives of the suspects and stop the potentially deadly situations fast.

“When they say this is the Combat Sports Training Facility, they really mean it, don’t they?” Joe asked his brother.
“Yeah,” Frank agreed. “Tonight somebody took the name a little too seriously.”

A lot happens in the book without it being too much, which is cool and a good balance. The writing style is enjoyable and believable. That is very much appreciated and makes a great Hardy Boys mystery.

It’s great that Joe and Frank’s girlfriends, Iola and Callie, are in the book. They’re cool characters. 😎 Also cool are the Hardys brothers’ parents. The Hardy brothers dad, Fenton, is away taking care of hackers in California and their mom, Laura, is very strong holding things down in Bayport. I like how good and strong both Fenton and Laura are. 😎

Con Riley, as the book notes, is a friend of theirs from the Bayport Police Department, also makes an appearance during the action of the case. Con’s a good guy and has helped the brothers on many cases. 😎

So many great scenes that I’d love to tell you about. I love Joe’s brave rescue that saved a visitor’s life. I like that Frank’s proud of Joe. 😎 Quote from Training for Trouble: ‘”No way this will work,’ someone said.” And that’s why it’s good that not just those with that attitude were there. That someone was wrong. One of the reasons I love the Hardy Boys books (and Nancy Drew books) that I’ve enjoyed reading, is the never give up attitude. No matter what, if something is good and right, such as saving a life, you never give in to doubters and negativity regardless of the threat.

I did say there’s plenty of action and danger throughout the book and you won’t want to put it down. You just can’t! Like when Joe gets injured at one point – scary! And calm Frank helping him. Good brothers. Then there’s some much needed humor a short time later, which, like in real life, is so essential to survival! 😎

So you’ve got clues for the dangerous mystery, suspects, motives, danger, courage, excitement, mystery, brotherly love, humor – all in there! 😎 Do they stop the sabotage and culprit(s) in time? What, you think I’m going to spill that? Gotta read and find out! 😉

The Hardy Boys #161 Training for Trouble is a great HB mystery and I’ve read it more than once so far – and I plan to read it again. It’s an exciting read every time. Check your booksellers and libraries for this book (in paper or ebook) to see what all danger can be found when training for trouble! 😎

Straight From the Books – Hardys Boys/Nancy Drew Facts 2 – Bayport, USA

We like to read about the Hardy family, Frank, Joe, Fenton, Laura and Gertrude (Trudy), Frank’s girlfriend, Callie Shaw, Joe’s girlfriend, Iola Morton, Iola’s brother, Chet, their friend, as well as their friends Phil Cohen, Biff Hooper, and Tony Prito, and find out fun facts. Time for more! They know where they live  and we know, too. Namely Bayport – and where is that exactly? Glad you asked! 🙂 Don’t worry it’s not missing. It’s in the books and on the map!

In my story, Bid for Intrigue, I included trivia from The Hardy Boys #139 The Search for the Snow Leopard, where we find out the exact house number and street address! 😎

Now, what state is Bayport located in? Another great question that I’m glad you asked! 😉 In the volumes of the main Hardy Boys series, The Hardy Boys (aka The Hardy Boys Mysteries/The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories #1-#190 1927-2005) it’s the state of New York. In The Hardy Boys #7 The Secret of the Caves, we find out ~

“There are only three Rockaways—one in Oregon, one in New Jersey, and the other on the coast down from Bayport.”

“It’s a cinch we won’t go to Oregon or New Jersey first,” Chet said.

There really are three places named Rockaway in the US. As noted in the book, located in the state of Oregon and New Jersey….. and on Long Island, New York. They mentioned the other states, so the clues in that sentence indicates that it’s in the same state as Bayport – New York, “on the coast down from Bayport.” That fits a number of clues in other volumes of The Hardy Boys series.

In The Hardy Boys #37 The Ghost at Skeleton Rock it’s noted that they moved to Bayport, where Fenton became an internationally famous private investigator after having served as a detective in the New York City Police Department. It doesn’t say they moved to a different state, but to “the coastal town of Bayport”.

In The Hardy Boys #189 One False Step Frank says ~

“If we need something that only a big city has, then we drive to New York,” Frank added.

He’s referring to New York City (NYC) specifically, which is often done in the books. They’re in the state of New York.

These are just a few of the things indicating Bayport is in New York.

And, just another little (BIG) clue to add ~ there is truly a Bayport, on Long Island, in New York. 😎

Bonus: Fun stats that show it to be in the state of New York, referencing the earlier mentioned quote about Rockaway in The Secret of the Caves, rather than Massachusetts ~ There’s a Bay Port Road in West Harwich, MA, so from there to Rockaway, NJ via 1-95 S (constructed 1957) it’s 295.6 miles which takes about 4 hours and 49 minutes. From West Harwich, MA to Rockaway, NY via  I-95 S it’s 269.2 miles that will take about 4 hours and 51 minutes. Bayport, NY to Rockaway via Southern State Pkwy (constructed 1927) it’s only 53.6 miles and only takes about 1 hour and 9 minutes. I can easily see why they’d choose to check out the one in their home state of New York first. 😉

If a book, series, or show says somewhere other than New York that means the ghostwriter(s) didn’t look up that fact and just missed it.

Here are some of the books in The Hardy Boys series that states that Bayport is in New York. 😎
#138 The Alaskan Adventure
#149 The Chase for the Mystery Twister
#155 The Hunt for Four Brothers
#158 The London Deception

Now you know. 🙂
