Nancy Drew Notebook #5 The Soccer Shoe Clue – My Review

I read The Soccer Shoe Clue last year during the summer and I think it’s great. I hadn’t read a Nancy Drew Notebook before that and this was a perfect one for me to read right off the bat. (Wrong sports metaphor there, I know. 😛 ) With the soccer/football mystery element, I had to read it first! Right away it was a hole in one…..(Still wrong sports metaphor 🙄 ).

Back to the mystery. I loved it! ♥ Definitely an enjoyable read that is good and realistic with Nancy, George, Bess, Hannah, and Carson Drew. The well-written mystery is intriguing, allowing the reader to find clues Nancy Drew Notebook #5 The Soccer Shoe Clueand try to figure out, from the various suspects, who might be the saboteur with motives and opportunities. The soccer/football is well-done. Not every sports-related mystery is a shot on goal. (There that’s the right sports metaphor! 😀 ).Yet, it also is interesting enough for someone who’s not a sports fan. The dialogue is good and flows well with believable, unique characters. This is an interesting mystery with a plot that isn’t too easy or too difficult. The sleuthing makes sense and the clues are fun to find.

As it shows on the cover, this is a “Ready-for-Chapters” mystery with shorter chapters and younger reading than the Nancy Drew series. Nancy, George and Bess are eight years old in this series, being friends, helping people, having adventures, and solving mysteries. It’s cool seeing them doing that whatever age they are. 🙂

Here’s the synopsis:

Kick! Splat! Yuck!
Who let the air out of the soccer ball? Who added salt to the water on the sidelines? Who put the red glop in the goalie’s soccer shoes?
It’s gooey. It’s gross. It’s not fair. Soccer is supposed to be a kick. But somebody’s being a drag. Nancy Drew wants to know who’s playing the silly games with her third grade soccer team!

I really enjoyed the whole book and how it worked out. I’ll definitely want to re-read it. And I’m trying others in the series, also. I think all Nancy Drew fans would enjoy this book. It has humor, mystery, a good pace, and the author wrote the characters right. That is very, very important to me! They all acted like themselves, being real, not lying, and being kind. As a mystery interwoven with a sport, this book helps point out that you can be competitive and not be a jerk. 😎

Nancy Drew Notebook #5 The Soccer Shoe Clue is available brand new in paperback and ebook from many booksellers. Hopefully it also can be checked out of your local library – it should be! 🙂 This one is a GOAL! 😀 And now you’ve read my review for The Soccer Shoe Clue! 🙂

Nancy Drew #11 The Clue of the Broken Locket ~ My Review

Nancy Drew #11 The Clue of the Broken Locket by Carolyn Keene

This is one of my favorite Nancy Drew covers ever – it just looks so cool. As a mystery reader, you’re immediately curious of what’s going on and what’s up with that mysterious locket Nancy’s holding in her hand. You just know there’s an intriguing story connected to it – and you find out that includes treasure! Even more important than the treasure, it’s a clue to those who are in danger and need help. There is more than one mystery in this book, which I love for there to be several in one volume. 😎 Great sleuthing from Nancy and the others to gather clues to solve these mysteries. The investigating, especially at night, is super-fun. 😎

In The Clue of the Broken Locket you’ll find: mysterious settings, stay at a cool cabin, hear some rockin’ music, see a curious sight of an alleged “phantom ship”, investigate a one-of-a-kind lodge, travel to Baltimore, Maryland, come across a Civil War era mystery still needing to be solved, learn what the clue in the broken locket is all about, and discover cool hidden places. Plenty of things to enjoy!

There are definitely some edge-of-your-seat scenes – literally for me. 😛 I’m reading the book, just really into it and focused on it then my Mom, who’d been in another room, innocently comes to tell me something and I jump! 😀 I was there with Nancy investigating, so I was startled! Told you I get into the books! My Mom totally understood – with a smile. 🙂

Absolutely love Ned in this book. He does a great job investigating and is very proud of Nancy. He was sure that the police chief there at Misty Lake hadn’t found out as much as Nancy had – and Ned was absolutely right. 😎 My favorite part in the whole book is when Ned wants to go punch the jerks who are being mean to the little twins in the story. One of the biggest reasons that I like the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books is because they, and others, help people and rescue them from bad ones – and stop wrongdoing. That is a universal necessity.

There are a number of excellent internal illustrations. The first one is a great, and intense, action one with Nancy trying to avoid being captured by the bad ones, who’ve been chasing her. I love seeing the pictures in the books.

Great quote by Nancy, trying to reassure her worried friends and explain how she can’t quite avoid danger ~ “But I never know when I’m going to have to take chances!” she countered. Thanks for taking chances, Nancy. 🙂

The I-can’t-believe-they-did-that-because-they-just-wouldn’t-do-that award goes to the scene where Nancy and Cecily, whom they’re helping, rescue one person, but still have others to rescue and the bad ones are likely to show up anytime, yet stand there and talk for a long time! That is really not the time to catch up on the details of the mystery. That can all be recounted LATER when everyone’s safe!!!! 😮

Still, that aside, there’s so much great sleuthing by our friends, with a lot of heart, bravery, courage, and tenacity. Intriguing mysteries, romance, and more than one reunion! I recommend this one to every Nancy Drew, and Hardy Boys, fan. 🙂

This mystery is available in hardcover and ebook at booksellers and libraries – check it out if you like good mysteries! 🙂

Nancy Drew Girl Detective #25 Trails of Treachery – My Review

Nancy Drew Girl Detective 25 Trails of Treachery

Trails of Treachery, #25, is one of the best in the Nancy Drew Girl Detective series! Nancy and Bess are George’s support team as she participates in an intense bike race in Costa Rica. It’s really beautiful there as the reader can imagine from the aptly described scenery. The author did such a great job with that, you can really feel like you’re there with Nancy, George, and Bess and some new friends. There are many dangerous situations they must contend with. The hazardous elements of the race trail include biking in extreme heat through the jungle and shivery cold temperature at the higher elevation of the volcano, plus a precarious rope and wood bridge, torrential rain, mud and dirt to deal with. Some very difficult obstacles to work through!

Along with all of that, there’s a mystery that also needs their attention. One of the top racers has been targeted for sabotage – and murder. Nancy, Bess, and, George do their best to investigate the threats and sabotage quickly, sensing that danger is racing to overtake them. It’s an intriguing, exciting mystery with several suspects. Definitely fast-paced with the action, plus the added pressure for our friends from River Heights having to determine, before it’s too late, whom they can trust. There are clues to find in the mystery and good sleuthing, making it fun to read.

Easily one of the best in the Girl Detective series. There are several volumes in the series that I think are good Nancy Drew books, including this one and #2 A Race Against Time. Both actually revolve around bike races, but they’re different mysteries. And I don’t like all bike race mysteries, such as the Nancy Drew Files one that my-Nancy-Hardy-book-reading-buddy sibling and I checked out last year together. I’d say that of the three alternate universe series, Files, Girl Detective, and Diaries so far, the one with the best books of the ones we’ve tried would be the Girl Detective series. My sib feels the same as me about the various series and made a great point that this book would make an awesome game. 😎 It sure would! 😎

Here’s the synopsis for Nancy Drew Girl Detective #25 Trails of Treachery from Simon and Schuster:

Leave it to Nancy Drew to be on the case no matter where she is….

Nancy and Bess travel to Costa Rica with George as she prepares to participate in La Ruta de los Conquistadores, a 3-day mountain bike race. It soon becomes clear that someone will go to great lengths to make sure top cyclist Derek Woodhall doesn’t win.

Actually, the top U.S. cyclist’s name is Derek McDaniel, not Woodhall. 🙄

So, if you enjoy reading Nancy Drew books with a good action-packed mystery in a well-described tropical setting, you’re gonna love this one! It’s available in ebook from Simon and Schuster and other ebooksellers, but the paperback is not available at this time. You can check a digital version out from libraries where they loan ebooks. And of course, a used copy of the paperback can be found online or perhaps at a library sale. 🙂 I have the ebook, but I’d like the paperback as well. 😎

Happy Anniversary, Nancy Drew!

Nancy Drew #3 The Bungalow Mystery by Carolyn KeeneAs I mentioned in a previous post, the 28th of April, 2015 is the anniversary of when the exciting, much-loved, cool, popular series, Nancy Drew (Nancy Drew Mysteries/Nancy Drew Mystery Stories) began being published. The 85th anniversary to be exact. Mystery readers have had the opportunity to read Nancy’s thrilling adventures starting on this date in 1930, with the publication of the first three volumes, The Secret of the Old Clock, The Hidden Staircase, and The Bungalow Mystery. That was the start of another successful Edward Stratemeyer series, The Hardy Boys (The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories/The Hardy Boys Stories) series having been established in 1927. Both series being read and loved here and now in the 21st century. That’s pretty cool. The Nancy Drew series continued with new stories from 1930 until November 2003 with #175 (The Hardy Boys went to April 2005 with #190). I have a facsimile edition of books #1-#3 (unread as of yet) and I also have the revised editions, which I have read. 🙂 My favorite of the first three Nancy Drew books is #3 The Bungalow Mystery. 🙂

There are several essential characters who’ve helped Nancy a lot. Her dad, Carson, is a lawyer who loves his daughter, and although he’s always concerned for her safety, he’s super proud of her. Her boyfriend, Ned Nickerson, brave, loyal, and smart, lets Nancy know he loves her, not only by telling her, but also showing it with understanding and support. Hannah Gruen, the Drews’ housekeeper who’s been like a mother to Nancy. George Fayne and Bess Marvin, cousins who’ve stuck with Nancy through many dangerous situations. Also Helen Corning, a friend appearing in several books. And my favorite characters, the Hardy Boys, brothers Frank and Joe, fellow detectives and justice-seekers have worked with Nancy.

Important trivia if you don’t want to be wrong: Nancy was 16 years old in the first book. That means she isn’t 85 years old today – because she would have had to have been a baby in The Secret of the Old Clock – and maybe people really matured a lot quicker than us today, but she could drive a car, etc, so that’s just not in the realm of possibility for her to be an infant in the first book. So since she was 16 in the original, she would be 101, but with her being 18 in the revised edition of The Secret of the Old Clock, you could say she’s 103. But it is physically impossible for her to literally be 85 and not 101 or 103. 🙂 So if you read anywhere online that’s she 85, you know that’s incorrect and you know the actual facts. 😎 If you want to get really technical, The Secret of the Old Clock was written in 1929, so that would make her 102 or 104. 🙂

It’s not a mystery at all as to why Nancy (and the Hardy Boys) continue to be important, much-read characters. The answer is that readers who love action and mystery love reading about the adventures of people who have a strong sense of ethics and are willing to take on deadly foes murderously intent on getting away with a number of crimes. Bad individuals and groups get stopped and it’s good to see that. Plus Nancy and the Hardys keep their sense of humor, which also helps them. Smart, brave, loyal, compassionate, resourceful, quick-witted and wise are all words that describe Nancy Drew (and The Hardy Boys 😀 ). And I’m extremely thankful to know that there are people like them for real. 🙂

Nancy not only has a lot of books, but other items as well. My mom and dad got me a book about Madame Alexander dolls and it has in there about the doll made in Nancy’s honor. Plus, there are numerous movies, games, several alternate universe book series, and graphic novels from Papercutz. The games includes PC/Mac/tablet/phone games from HeR Interactive, including one of my favorite ones, The Secret of the Old Clock – which I like more than the book. 😎

So those of us who love an adventure want to read the exciting mysteries Nancy’s solved. You can find them on sale online or in bookstores, or check them out of public libraries in paperback, hardcover, and ebook. Puzzling clues and fascinating mysteries at a variety of locations await you! 🙂

Let me know what you like most about Nancy and if you have a favorite book or game! 🙂

Nancy Drew Diary #9 The Clue at Black Creek Farm

Here’s the synopsis and info for The Clue at Black Creek Farm, the ninth volume of the Nancy Drew Diary series. 🙂 It will be available the 12th of May, 2015 and is 208 pages. I think the title and the mystery sounds intriguing. The plot seems deeper and more detailed than the previous books in the Diary series and hopefully it will have the necessary-but-sometimes-missing elements for mysteries such as danger, action, and excitement. 😎 Btw, murder isn’t a necessity for a good mystery. I look forward to Nancy, Bess, and George solving the case and helping those in need. 😎 Also looking forward to seeing the cover, too! 🙂

Healthy eating becomes a hazard when a local farm is sabotaged in this ninth book of the Nancy Drew Diaries.

Nancy, Bess, and George are thinking about joining Black Creek Farm CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). Sam and Abby Heyworth run both Black Creek’s organic farm and the CSA, a program where people pay to receive fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the growing season. Buyers get local produce at a reasonable price; the farmers get money to run their farm. Everybody wins!

But during a fundraising dinner showcasing the farm’s produce, several people become seriously ill, and tests reveal that the fruits and vegetables are contaminated with deadly E. coli bacteria. Sam swears his produce is clean: E. coli doesn’t magically appear in vegetables—it has to be transferred by animals or contaminated equipment. And after the Heyworth’s greenhouse is trashed and their chickens are killed by an intruder, Nancy thinks all signs point to sabotage.

Nancy, Bess, and George are on the case. But who would try to ruin a farm? And why?

You can find out in paperback, hardcover, or ebook, from a bookstore, ebookseller, or library when it’s available in May. 🙂

Nancy Drew Diaries 9 The Clue at Black Creek Farm by Carolyn Keene

********************************************************************************

This next item doesn’t have anything to do with the book but, it is a mystery. I’m having a terrible time signing in to my email account – as in it’s not happening. I don’t know what the deal is, but I signed in no problem yesterday, late afternoon. Then later I used the same computer, etc., entered my info to sign in and all and it wouldn’t open. Grrrr! 🙄 It gives me a nonsensical (suspicious because nothing is different in signing in 🙄 ) message and won’t proceed. I tried several times, even re-started the computer, but same thing. 😦 Anyway, really thankful this blog is working. 😎

On a much better note, I’ll hopefully get another chapter posted this week of Hardys Inn Danger. Plus, I also want to start the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew trivia page I’ve been putting together and add to the Hardy and Drew character page very soon. 🙂

Great News for Nancy Drew Fans!

One of my favorite Nancy Drew books is Captive Witness (such a cool cover!), which, along with the others listed below, had been available in hardcover and ebook. When the Penguin/Grosset & Dunlap ebooks became unavailable last year, I thought that Simon and Schuster had decided to release them digitally themselves. Looks like case solved. And hopefully this means more will become available as ebooks finally. 🙂 Naturally, I hope that for the Hardy Boys books as well. 😎

Nancy Drew #153 Whispers in the Fog – My Review

Whispers in the Fog by Carolyn KeeneNancy Drew #153 Whispers in the Fog has thrilling adventure, intriguing mystery, and great Nancy Drew book characters to qualify as one of my top favorite ND books of all time! 😀 It’s fast-paced while giving enough time to details and plenty of action. And a cool title! 😎

There are essential elements for a great mystery in the book – cool places to investigate such as lighthouses and sea-caves, complete with eerie noises and plenty of danger! 😎  Picturing the beautiful scenery’s very enjoyable, too. 🙂 Interestingly, it takes place during this month. 🙂

Nancy, Ned, George, and Bess are in Seabreak, California, visiting a friend of George’s, Katie Firestone. Katie and George had both been in a world sea kayaking competition together. Along with getting in some training and practicing, disturbing problems need to be taken care of that are threatening Katie’s boat and income. Someone seems to want Katie’s whale-watching tourist business to sink via threats and sabotage. Katie’s guests from River Heights decide to help her keep that from happening. 😎

There are a number of suspects to investigate. And the sleuthing’s done very well – big clues as well as harder-to-find clues aren’t overlooked. Nancy’s a detective and although, of course, she can make mistakes, this book doesn’t have unrealistic and uncharacteristic poor detecting like in some other books. I’m really glad about that because it makes the book so much more enjoyable, because Nancy’s not going to miss clues a person not even looking for them would find. So definitely good, well-trained, intelligent sleuthing in this mystery. 😎

Anyone who has played HeR Interactive’s awesome Nancy Drew PC/Mac game, Danger on Deception Island, and also read the excellent Nancy Drew Mystery, Whispers in the Fog, can see the similarities between the two. But they aren’t identical so neither mystery would be blown no matter which one you play/read first. When I received the game as a birthday gift, I didn’t have the book yet (and didn’t know about the similar details.) So I played the game first, then a little later read the book and love both. 🙂 It’s great that HeR Interactive made such a cool game based on elements from Whispers in the Fog. Dangerous situations in both make them exciting to read and to play. 🙂

I love that Ned’s in the book, always great to see him. 🙂 Great description of him, too – tall, clean-cut good looks, athletic. And cousins, George and Bess, are also very important to the story and I’m happy they’re in the mystery, too. 🙂 All three have adventures and it’s good Nancy can count on them. 🙂

I really enjoyed the sea kayaking, biking, exploring and investigating the sea caves, lighthouse, and other places in both the book and the game.:)

My friend Callie’s eloquent words explains it so well – getting across the excitement and mystery waiting for every reader in the Nancy Drew Mystery Whispers in the Fog. 🙂 She posted her extremely cool review when we were talking on another blog entry, Nancy Drew Mystery Stories Available As eBooks or Will Be and with her permission, I’m re-posting it on this one. 🙂

Whispers in the Fog (book 153) is one of the best Nancy Drew mysteries! 😀 It is a well-thought-out and well-written story with intriguing circumstances, fascinating discoveries, and thrilling action! 😎 This book contains more than one mystery and Nancy solves them all in her tried and true detecting style. 😎 Her Ned, as well as her friends Bess and George, add to the exciting mystery-solving with additional bravery, know-how, and solid detecting skills, too. 😎 The setting is along the northern coastline of California. 😎 The action includes:

A treacherous driver determined to run Nancy off of the steep-cliffed coastal road.

An unknown enemy chasing the detective through a dangerous and dark grove of twisted trees.

A desperate search for a woman swept away by a potentially deadly “sneaker wave”.

And an adrenaline-filled, high-speed race to stop a murder that is about to take place before Nancy’s very eyes!

This book also has intriguing discoveries and fascinating sleuthing spots like:

An old, abandoned lighthouse!

A sea cave with multiple rooms – and perhaps an additional entrance!

A huge ocean freighter – whose owner decides to get Nancy, Ned, and Bess out of the way by depositing them in some foreign land to fend for themselves in an enemy state!

There is so much more I could say about how great, thrilling, and satisfying this mystery story is, but I will leave the rest – and the details thereof – for each of you who have yet to read this exciting Nancy Drew Mystery Story entitled, Whispers in the Fog! 😎 😀 Callie

Excellently said, Callie! 😎 🙂 😎 Thank you so much for sharing! 🙂 I love multiple mysteries, too, and agree whole-heartedly with what you said!  😎

Anyone who would like to read Whispers in the Fog can buy the eBook from booksellers or check it out of the library in paperback or in digital edition if yours has those available. Plus there are used paperbacks available online or in used bookstores. 🙂
